After losing round 2 in US Open 2021 against Alexei Poprocks (Popyrin) from Australia, fans were shook to the core to see Grigor Dimitrov retire in the middle of the third set at 7-6(4) 7-6(4) 4-0. Having had, unfortunately, lose both sets before, then revealing he had sustained a foot injury and continued play, the pain was unbearable (and it was unbearable to watch him play with an injured foot) he had to retire.
This was not the first time this year to see the Bulgarian player retire in a Grand Slam event, in the 2021 Roland Garros earlier in June, Grigor Dimitrov retired against American player Marcos Giron in the first round because of a back injury.
It is great to see that Dimitrov has recovered and is back on the court, striving for his 9th career title at San Diego !!
With a packed entry list, with the top seeds Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Hubert Hurkacz, Diego Schwartzman (ok it would be really cool and funny if Diego won San Diego Open not going to lie, he's my personal second pick)
Grigor will meet Felix Auger-Aliassime in a Round 2 playoff after having taken his win against Marton Fucsovics in a really close match, finishing at 3-6 6-1 5-7, winning in three sets.
The second set was impossible to watch, to watch him lose by that much, absolutely painful. Luckily he remembered that he used to be a top 3 player and came back to win in the third set.
Grigor's shape looks great at the moment, **and so does he ;)** It's great to see him on the court again, and seeing him play is always a treat.
His next upcoming match against Felix Auger-Alisassime will be hard, and a challenge and (highly likely would end in a loss to Grigor) but one can hope. But I believe in our Bulgarian Tennis Player and **eternal stud**.
Currently ranked at 29, winning San Diego will push him up the ranks just a little bit higher.
Grigor will be back Sep 30th, against Felix Auger-Aliassime, in the Round of 16 playoff.
